À propos de l'auteur
Derham, W.
W. (William) Derham was an English clergyman, natural philosopher, and one of the most influential popularizers of early Enlightenment science in Britain. Born in 1657 and educated within the Church of England, he spent much of his life in parish ministry while pursuing careful observations of the natural world, a combination that shaped his distinctive voice: devout, inquisitive, and eager to show that faith and scientific inquiry could reinforce one another. Derham’s reputation rests above all on his writings that interpreted nature as evidence of divine design, works that helped make natural theology a major intellectual current in the early eighteenth century. He also contributed to astronomy, optics, and the study of birds and other living creatures, bringing a methodical spirit to subjects that were then still being organized into modern scientific disciplines. What makes Derham still relevant is the way he bridges two worlds often seen as opposed today: religious belief and empirical investigation. His work reflects an age when close attention to the physical world was understood as a route to moral and philosophical insight, and his arguments reveal both the confidence and the limits of early modern science. For contemporary readers, he is significant not only as a historical figure in the development of scientific thought, but also as a reminder that curiosity about nature can be tied to wonder, ethics, and the search for meaning. Readers interested in the history of science, religion, and ideas, especially those drawn to the origins of environmental and philosophical thinking, are likely to find Derham both illuminating and unexpectedly engaging.
